How to get customers buying products... How to get clients booking services…

Seems like a really general topic (and a mountain of a task), but there are plenty of ways to do it effectively - and quickly!

Yes, you have to optimize SEO, have great website copy, market consistently and engage in market research… Blah, blah, blah…

But here are some really quick copy changes that you can add to ads, offerings and sales.

When Customers Take the CTA, That Means Business

For many businesses, the main call-to-action (CTA) is to buy or book a service. But, CTAs can be your main marketing outcome or secondary, “nice to do” things like subscribe to a newsletter, follow on social media or leave a review.

In this week’s post, I compiled a list of things you can do to get customers to buy your products or act on a CTA. These build upon your entire marketing strategy, but they may be just that extra push customers need to commit.

9 Ways to Boost Action from Customers

1 - Freebies & Lead Magnets

Who doesn’t love free?! If you have an email newsletter or email funnel, freebies are perfect to increase sign-ups.

Compelling automated email programs give something away instantly while customers are excited about the brand. Plus, your emails should be upselling and throwing in other offers.

Need freebie lead magnet ideas? Here’s a list of 20 great lead magnets.

2 - Discounts

Need I say more? Just make sure it’s super easy for customers to use that discount. Otherwise, you still may lose the sale, or worse - customers will feel deceived.

3 - Coupons & Promo Codes

Clip ‘em, copy ‘em, scan ‘em!

Make them simple and irresistible. Make sure these coupons fit seamlessly into the purchase process to minimize confusion, frustration and lag time between “I see it” and “I’mma buy it.”

4- BOGO

I love this one because these four letters give so much value to your customers. Plus, from a copywriting standpoint, it’s a short way to say a heck of a lot!

5 - Rewards Programs

Rewards programs entice new customers and keep existing ones coming back. But, some are easier to use than others.

You have to think about your target audience and how easy it is for them to use the rewards program. Younger people scanning rewards on their phone? Sure.

(Now, I don’t want to name any names… but I’ve seen certain grocery stores boast about their “rewards program” and yet it’s so hard for their elderly population to use.)

Countless times, I’ve stood in line behind elderly shoppers who struggle immensely to get the rewards points - or they don’t even know about the rewards program.

Of course, some elderly people do fine with technology, but why would a company do that to their customers? Is it a scam? Just a way to “say” they offer rewards? Absolutely, if you ask me.

6 - Giveaways & Contests

Perfect for growing email lists! Plus, a perfect gateway into referrals (#7)! Make it easy, straightforward and something your target audience would really want to win.

7 - Referral Incentives

Refer a friend and get rewarded! Another great way to double your customers!

The key here is to make sure the referral copy (text with a link, email, etc.) is totally targeted to this friend.

Sure, this new friend is probably within your target audience, but they’re going to read your copy differently than that original customer who referred them. (So the copy has to be different and focused on them.)

8 - Proceeds to Charity

One reason I like to buy Newman’s Own and Rachel Ray is that proceeds benefit a cause. If you’ve got that connection boast the heck out of it. Customers love when they get something and they help someone else.

9 - Cause-Related Labeling

This aligns with charity connections, but there are other labels that attract customers. Here’s a short list:

  • Made in the USA

  • Women-Owned

  • Veteran-Owned

  • Eco-Friendly

  • Black-Owned

If it’s true, say it proud! Just do some research to see what really resonates with your customers.

How to Write Promotions in Your Copy

These are all really simple copywriting additions that can be made to your current marketing materials.

All you have to do is add one of these to your current website copy, ads, email programs, newsletter sign-up and BAM! You’re making better moves in your marketing.

But be sure to blend brand voice and targeted messaging.

Important note: Make sure you’re giving the audience something they absolutely want. How? Convince them in your copy.

Does all of this make you go, “Yikes! How the HECK can I do that?”

You can always hire a great copywriter. (No, that’s not a link to me. It’s to a blog post!) Copywriters make it easy, quick and painless for you!

And hey! I’m a copywriter! (There’s my plug.) I’ll make your copy boost sales, brand loyalty… whatever CTA you’ve got in mind.
